The Start of Mobile Commerce
I'm an early adopter. A gadget guy. And I work in the space, so it's my job at Havas Discovery to not only watch the trends, but to participate in and shape them. So it's natural that I'm a big fan of mobile commerce. The idea that I can roll around and pay for things with my phone is more than intriguing -- I want to do it. The trouble is, there's no clear leader in the space with enough penetration to get over the tipping point. My recent experiences went like this.

Cyber Monday
Cyber Monday emails were in my inbox before Black Friday was even over. After being one of the midnight Black Friday shoppers, how could I possibly need to buy anything else on Cyber Monday? Easy. The Amazon and Best Buy deals got me. When I received the email promotion from Amazon saying the Kindle Touch was $99, I went ahead and checked off Mom’s Christmas gift from the list. The Video Upgrade for E-Commerce
Consumers have been shopping online for years. This adaption from bricks to clicks has been successful for businesses selling as well as the consumers who are buying. It was [string of consonants that mean nothing to me go here]-enabled; it had a something-something-something camera; and I’m pretty sure it could download anything at the speed of light. He might have gone on to tell me this wondrous little gizmo could send smoke signals to outer space and make bacon and eggs.
But I had a question.
Did it make phone calls?
A silly question? Perhaps. I’m not a techno-phobe. But I’m not an early adopter, either. I still remember, wistfully, when my 3rd grade best friend’s parents put a “kids line” in their house. My parents’ house has had the same phone number since 1940. And I very clearly remember life before answering machines.
Don’t get me wrong: technology, especially the cell phone, is great. People can get you anywhere, night or day. But they can be inconvenient too. I mean, people can get you anywhere, night or day.
Technology IS great, but ...
